Pope Baptizes Twenty-Eight Babies on Feast of the Baptism of the Lord

On Sunday, January 8, 2017, Pope Francis baptized twenty-eight babies during the morning Mass for the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. He gave a brief, unscripted homily during the Mass to the parents of the children regarding the faith bestowed in baptism and the role of the parents in fostering this faith. He said, “Faith is believing what is the truth: that God, the Father, who sent His Son and the Spirit, gives us life.” Encouraging the parents to be witnesses of this faith, the Pope added, “You must teach to them [your children], by your example and by your life.” In having their children baptized, parents take on a great responsibility; they “have the task to make [faith] grow, preserve it, and ensure it becomes a witness to all the others.”

When some of the babies began to cry during his homily, the Holy Father gently acknowledged their cries, saying that “Jesus did the same: I like to think that the first ‘sermon’ of Jesus in the stable was a cry.” At this time the Holy Father spoke directly to the mothers, encouraging them to breastfeed “without fear, all as normal, as the Madonna nursing Jesus.” He closed with another reminder to the parents of their task in raising baptized children. “To you,” he said, “is the task of guarding the faith, making it grow, in order that it may become a witness for all of us.”
